action

The film is set in Moscow in 1976 . Anatoly Eefremowitsch Novosselzew, a clumsy single father of two sons, works in a state statistical office. His boss is a strict single woman in her late 30s, Lyudmila Prokofjewna Kalugina, who is nicknamed "our Trulla" by her subordinates. Novosselzew dreams of a promotion and a raise , but is too shy to talk to his boss about it. His former classmate and old friend Yuri Grigoryevich Samokhvalov suggests that his old friend be appointed head of the light industry department , but Kalugina refuses this advice. On Samokhvalov's advice, Novosselzew tries involuntarily to flirt with "the Trulla" at a party in Samokhvalov's apartment, but Kalugina is very angry about his attempts to impress her. Finally Novosselzew is frustrated and tells Kalugina that he thinks she is “dry, inhuman and heartless”.

The next morning Novosselzew comes to her office to apologize, but then Kalugina suddenly bursts into tears and reveals that his accusations from the previous evening have hurt her. They have a heart-to-heart conversation, get closer and soon fall in love. Kalugina, who has thrown off her "mask" from a hard-hearted woman, is becoming more aware of her femininity and surprises everyone with her new, elegant clothes and her charming appearance.

The relationship between Anatoly and Lyudmila continues to develop, full of weird situations and arguing. At the same time, a drama unfolds between Olga Ryschowa and Yuri Samochwalow, who were together many years ago during their student days. They both have families now, but Olga's romantic feelings are resurrected after meeting Samokhvalov in the office. However, he only treats her like a friend. She begins to write him love letters, which she sends him through the secretary Werotschka. Samokhvalov, tired of the wave of love letters, tells the intrusive Shura, an activist on the local union committee and the biggest gossip in the office, of the situation. He gives her the letters and asks her to resolve the problem at the committee meeting. Later, heartbroken and humiliated, Ryschowa asks Samokhvalov to return the letters to her and goes back to her normal life.

Earlier, after Novosselzew learned that Samokhvalov was showing his good friend Ryschova's love letters to Shura, he was completely over-excited. Novosselzew suddenly hits Samakhalov hard in the face. Samokhvalov takes revenge by revealing Novosselzew's original "plan" to Kalugina. She is shocked and wants to give up Novosselzew. She calls him into her office and tells him about her decision to appoint him head of the light industry department and end their relationship. Novosselzew is ashamed and admits that their relationship was really just because of the money, but insists that he learned to love her. Kalugina repels him. For his part, he refuses the appointment and submits his resignation. Kalugina refuses to fire Novoseletsev in order to annoy him. A fiery argument develops, which leads to a loud scuffle right in the office. Everything ends with Novosselzew trying to escape the angry Lyudmila: He runs out of the building and jumps into the back seat of a car (which turns out to be Kalugina's official vehicle with a personal chauffeur), she follows him furiously, but Novosselzew manages to get her to calm down, and you can see them hugging. A fade-in indicates that there will be three boys in Novosselzev's family in just 9 months, that is, Anatoly and Lyudmila will later have a son.
