Basilica of Our Lady (Zwolle)
The Basilica of Our Lady ( Dutch Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Hemelopneming ) is a Catholic church in the Dutch city of Zwolle .
history
The present church was built in four phases. The choir was built between 1394 and 1399. This was followed by the construction of the transept and the easternmost central nave yoke, which was completed in 1417. In 1454 the nave stood . The tower was built between 1463 and 1484 and is popularly called "Peperbus" ( pepper shaker ) because of the appearance of the lantern with dome that was placed on it in 1540 .
Between 1580 and 1810 the church was used for secular purposes. In 1809 it was handed over to the Catholics, who, after repairs, took it for worship in 1811. The aisles added during a restoration in 1871 were removed again in 1975. In 1999 Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a minor basilica . The remains of Thomas von Kempen have been in the Liebfrauenbasilika since 2006 .
organ
The organ was built in 1896 by the organ builder Michael Maarschalkerweerd (Utrecht). The organ case dates from 1697. It was built for the organ in the Observant Church in Münster . After the church was closed during the French occupation of Westphalia, the organ case was sold to Zwolle. The instrument has 38 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
