Lilian Benningsen

Lilian Benningsen (born July 17, 1924 in Vienna ; † June 12, 2014 in Munich ) was an Austrian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano and alto ).

Life

Lilian Benningsen received her training as a singer in Vienna from the renowned singing teachers Elisabeth Radó and Anna Bahr-Mildenburg . She had her first great success in 1947 when the 23-year-old won first prize in the singing competition of the Vienna Society of Music Friends . Less than a year later, Lilian Benningsen made her debut at the Salzburg State Theater . Engagements at the Stadttheater Göttingen and at the Cologne Opera (1950–1952) followed.

Her guest appearance at the Munich Opera in 1951 caused a sensation in the operatic world of the Bavarian capital and beyond: She sang Eboli in Don Carlos . The singer was hired for the Bavarian State Opera and was a permanent member of the Munich opera ensemble for three decades. She sang alongside Erika Köth , Leonie Rysanek , Marianne Schech , Josef Metternich , Kurt Böhme , Hans Hopf and others. a. m. In addition to roles such as Marzelline in The Marriage of Figaro (including on June 14, 1958 for the reopening of the Cuvilliés Theater ) and The Barber of Seville , Dorabella in Così fan tutte , Fricka in the Ring cycle, and Amneris in Aida were others Highlights of her repertoire of roles is Octavian in Rosenkavalier and again and again, alternating with Hertha Töpper , Carmen in the opera of the same name by Georges Bizet .

Her grave is in the forest cemetery in Gauting .
