Lilium ciliatum flower

Lilium ciliatum is a species from the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the Candidum section that occurs only in Turkey. It was first described in 1965.

description

Lilium ciliatum is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 60 to 150 centimeters. The onion is oval, 5 to 10 centimeters wide and consists of numerous slender scales.

The stem is firm, densely hairy and stiffly upright, at the base it has a diameter of up to 1.8 centimeters. The subterranean stem part is rooted, but this rooting is only formed after flowering, for the purpose of additional nutrient absorption during the autumn formation of the onion. The lanceolate to linear-lanceolate leaves are 7 to 18 cm long and 1.3 to 2.1 mm wide. They stand close together in a spiral arrangement around the stem. The surface of the leaves is smooth, on the edges they are ciliate with long, coiled, woolly hairs that are shed during the ripening of the capsule fruit .

This species blooms in early July in a racemose inflorescence that contains two to ten, rarely fifteen pendulous flowers . The hermaphroditic, threefold flowers have a diameter of up to 5 centimeters and six degree recurved, turks bund shaped similarly shaped bloom cladding ( tepals ). The bracts are narrowly elliptical to almost rectangular, blunt, tapering downwards, are 4.2 to 5.5 inches long and 8 to 12 millimeters wide and at the extreme point papilous and hairy. The basic color of the flowers is creamy white to pale yellow, they are mottled purple, not at all at the outermost point and in increasing density towards the throat to a continuous spot. At the base the flower is tinged with green on the outside. Each flower contains three carpels and six stamens . The yellow anthers are about six to eight millimeters long, the pollen are orange, the green filaments are about 2 to 3 centimeters long. The stylus is 1.5 to 2 inches long.

There are fruit capsules formed. The dark brown seeds germinate delayed hypogean .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Distribution and location

Lilium ciliatum is endemic to the Trabzon area of Turkey . There it grows at altitudes from 1500 to 2400  m . Even during the flowering period, the locations are close to the snow line, mostly above the tree line , on meadows on gentle slopes with loamy soils.

Botanical history

The first plants of the species were found and collected as early as the mid-30s, but at that time they were still designated as the Pyrenean lily (or Lilium ponticum ). Only a further collection in 1960 by Paul Furse led to the realization that we were dealing with a previously unknown species, which was first described by Davis in 1965.
