Lilium occidentale is a species from the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the American section . Lilium occidentale has rarely and never been used to breed hybrids , although its coloring is unusual and beautiful.

description

Lilium occidentale reaches a height of 60 to 180 cm. The onions are small, round and reach a diameter of about 4 cm; they are covered with white scales and form rhizomes .

The stem is hard and straight. The leaves are narrow and lanceolate, up to 26 cm long and up to 3 cm wide. They are arranged in one to nine whorls of three to nineteen leaves.

The plant blooms from June to August with 1 to 15 flowers nodding in a panicle with a glossy texture. The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six identical bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ) are strongly bent back ( Turk's League shape) and 4 to 8 cm long. The basic color of the flowers is greenish, the throat is orange to orange-red in color with dark brown spots. The tips of the tepals are brick-red and overflowed with green on the outside. There are three carpels and six stamens in each flower. The anthers are brown, the pollen are orange and the filaments are light green, the nectaries dark.

The seeds ripen in 2 to 5 cm large seed pods and germinate with a delay - hypogean .

distribution

The home of the species is in the western USA in a narrow coastal strip from Humboldt Bay (California) to Coos Bay in Oregon . It is never found more than six kilometers from the coast. Lilium occidentale is very rare and is a protected species (Fish and Wildlife Service 1998).

Lilium occidentale needs moist soil; it grows best in wet meadows or damp places on the edges of forests.

use

The Karok Indians ate the onions of the lily after being baked in an earth oven as a specialty.
