Limões is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Ribeira de Pena . It has 335 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

In the course of the regional reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Cerva and Limões were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Cerva e Limões . Cerva became the seat of the new administration.

history

The place was probably built in the 13th century, on the road to Vila Real . The municipality, which had become independent in the meantime, belonged to the Cerva district until it was dissolved in 1853 . Limões has belonged to the Ribeira de Pena County since 1854 .

Culture and sights

The town's monuments include a number of sacred buildings , including the 17th century Baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Limões . The church, also called Igreja de São João Baptista ( Portuguese for St. John the Baptist Church ) after its patron saint , contains u. a. a high altar and two late baroque altarpieces made of gilded wood ( talha dourada ).

The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.

The maintenance of handed-down traditions continues in the community. This includes traditional handicrafts , especially linen blankets and embroidery. The local cooperative Cooperativa de Artesanato de Limões organizes the production and sale of the pieces. Old games, including Jogo do pau and a variety of wooden throwing games, are also among the traditions that have been maintained in the community.
