Linda B. Hayden

Linda Bailey Hayden (born February 4, 1949 in Portsmouth (Virginia) ) is an American mathematician , computer scientist and university teacher . She specializes in applications of mathematics in the earth sciences and is known for her mentoring of minorities and women in science, technology, engineering, and math. She is Professor and Assistant Dean of Mathematics and Computer Science at Elizabeth City State University .

life and work

Bailey Hayden was the daughter of Linwood Copeland, Sr. and Sarah Vaughn Bailey and attended Portsmouth Public Schools for their elementary and secondary education. After graduating from IC Norcom High School in Portsmouth, she attended Virginia State University and received a bachelor 's degree in mathematics and physics in 1970 . In 1972 she received her masters degree in mathematics and education from the University of Cincinnati and was subsequently assistant professor of mathematics at Kentucky State University until 1976 . She then was an Assistant Professor at Norfolk State University and was appointed Associate Professor of Computer Science at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in 1980. There she founded and directed the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER). In 1983 she received her Masters Degree in Computer Science from Old Dominion University . From 1985 to 1988 she was Assistant Professor of Computer Science at American University . In 1988 she received her PhD in Mathematics and Education from the American University under Mary W. Gray with the dissertation: The Impact of an Intervention Program for High Ability Minority Students on Rates of High School Graduation, College enrollment and Choice of a Quantitative Major. She then taught until 1989 as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of the District of Columbia and from 1989 she was Professor of Computer Science at Elizabeth City State University. Hayden was a founding member and later president of the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Geosciences and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). She is married to Lee V. Hayden Jr., with whom she has a son.
