The Linke Fernerkogel ( 3277  m above sea level ) is a mountain in the Ötztal Alps in the rearmost Pitztal , in the Austrian state of Tyrol .

location

The left and right Fernerkogel ( 3300  m above sea level ) are based on the Mittelbergferner , a glacier that lies between them. The summit of the Linken Fernerkogel lies on the western edge of the Kars from the Hangenden Ferner . In the north, south and west, the mountain falls into a steep rock face, at the foot of which the Mittelbergferner extends north. In the north of the mountain lies the Karlesferner , which is fed from the Hangenden Ferner.

Mountain climbing

The ascent of the mountain usually goes from the Braunschweiger Hütte over the middle of the Hangenden Ferners. A faster, steeper and more direct ascent than an alpine tour is common and requires basic knowledge of glacier hiking. The ascent is possible in about two hours.

Use of the mountain

The summit cross of the Linke Fernerkogel

So far, the Linke Fernerkogel has only been used as a destination for alpine mountain climbs. At its foot, on the Karlesferner and Hangenden Ferner, basic knowledge of companion rescue and glacier hiking are often trained and practiced in courses .

There is a discussion going on to develop the Hangenden Ferner and Karlesferner ski areas, which, however, involve massive interventions in the high mountain landscape. The descent route is to run on today's ascent route and the hiking route is to be relocated to the edge of the glacier. A cable car will also lead from Mittelberg to the summit. However , in 2005 the German Alpine Association rejected this new spatial planning program.

An environmental impact assessment has been running since May 2019 for the Pitztal-Ötztal ski area expansion and merger project , which is intended to create a connection between the two ski areas in the area around the Linke Fernerkogel. In the event of a permit, construction is to begin in autumn 2020. Among other things, three cable cars, a concrete reservoir for snow-making systems, four kilometers of streets, restaurants and bars would be built for this purpose. To do this, a mountain ridge would have to be removed by 40 meters. The environmental organizations Alpenverein , Naturfreunde and WWF Austria criticize the massive interventions in nature associated with the project. Your Alliance for the Soul of the Alps initiative calls for the project to be stopped. An online petition against glacier construction was also set up.
