Lionel Kopelowitz

Lionel Kopelowitz (born December 9, 1926 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a British doctor . From 1988 to 1991 he was President of the European Jewish Congress .

Life

Kopelowitz studied medicine at Clifton College in Bristol and Trinity College in Cambridge. He completed his practical training at University College Hospital in London. From 1952 to 1953 he served in the Royal Air Force . From 1995 to 1999 he was a council member of the Royal College of General Practitioners medical association ; he is also a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians .

Kopelowitz headed several Jewish associations. So he was u. a. from 1973 to 1976 President of the United Hebrew Congregation in Newcastle upon Tyne. From 1985 to 1991 he was President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the National Council On Soviet Jewry . From 1988 to 1991 he chaired the European Jewish Congress (EJC). He is also a member of the Jewish Claims Conference and the Executive Committee Friends of Hebrew University .
