Lisl gold worker (1929)

Lisl Goldarbeiter , actually Liesl-Elisabeth , (born March 23, 1909 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † December 14, 1997 in Budapest ) came from Vienna, was a model and Miss Austria 1929 . She was chosen on June 11, 1929 in Galveston (Texas) to be the only Austrian and at that time the first non-American Miss Universe in history.

Life

Goldarbeiter was the daughter of Izsó (Isidor) gold worker (born May 3, 1877 in Szeged ; murdered on February 16, 1945 in Mauthausen ), a Jewish clothing merchant , and Aloisia nee. Schimek. She was registered in her parents' apartment in Vienna 2 , Freilagergasse 5 (today: Neubau Vivariumstraße  11, Stiege 3) until July 27, 1937. On this date she reported to Pressburg .

Even before the Miss Universe competition, gold workers took part in the election of the most beautiful European woman in Paris in February of the same year. After the trophy went to a Hungarian woman, Goldworker expressed an intention to go to the film. However, it would be her passionate wish to finally get out of poverty and tightness .

In July 1929 the director of the Ischl Kurtheater Josef Jarno promised her to appear in a play specially written for her in August of that year. This announcement led to a bitter controversy between the local newspapers Tagblatt and Tages-Post with regard to a performance at the Linz State Theater . On November 7, 1929, the world beauty queen appeared in the comedy Das Geld auf der Straße at the Landestheater and was presented by director Albert Hugelmann when the audience acclaimed after the first act. Gold workers donated the fee to the Red Cross .

Since the winner of the Most Beautiful Woman in Europe competition ( Miss Europe 1929 ) did not want to recognize the goldworker's title Miss Universe , the most beautiful woman in the world was elected in Deauville at the end of July 1929 . Goldworker, who had lost five kilos due to the stress of traveling and appointments and was looking for relaxation, stayed away from the competition: the participants Miss Europe 1929 (Hungary) and Miss America 1928 (Germany) were declared equal winners .

In the summer of 1930 Goldarbeiter married Fritz Spielmann, who came from a Viennese industrialist family and whom she had met in Paris (before her trip to Galveston).

Probably the most famous representation of gold workers comes from the painter Carry Hauser . In 2005 Péter Forgács gave her life under the title Miss Universe 1929 - Lisl Goldarbeiter. A Queen filmed in Vienna .

She married her second cousin Marczell Tenczer in 1949. Lisl Goldarbeiter-Tenczer is buried on the Farkasréti temető .
