Eberhardstrasse

Johann Bernhard Eberhard (1795–1860) was Hanau's first mayor from 1832 and later also Minister of the Interior of Hesse. During his term of office a comprehensive modernization of the administration and the school system, the establishment of the municipal savings bank, a new cemetery and the establishment of a welfare service fell.

Charles Engelhard (1867–1950) was a German-American entrepreneur. Engelhard, who comes from Hanau, successfully managed the platinum smelter of the Heraeus company in the United States. After the Second World War he supported the needy population and the reconstruction of the city with financial donations. In 1947 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Hanau.
