Site of the Association of Old and New Town
In 1377 the old town and the new town were united. The agreement of October 6, 1377 contained the rules how council and mayor should be determined in the future. Every year on St. Matthias Day (February 23), a twelve-person council and the mayor should be elected. For this purpose, the six guilds each appointed an elector. An elector was chosen from the peasants of the old and new towns and was elected by the old council. Two more electors were also elected by the old council. These ten electors determined the new council and from its ranks the mayor and his deputy (as well as other officials, including the Pfennigmeister (treasurer)).
The following list is complete as of 1511.
From the Reformation
The Reformation in Korbach had no influence on the election of the council and mayor. In the following decades the tensions between the rulership of the Waldeck counts and the city grew. The statutes of the city of Korbach from 1589 , which had come about without the involvement of the state rulers, were in conflict with the Waldeck judicial system of 1855. After many legal proceedings between the city and the count, this conflict culminated in a military dispute. In the end, the city was forced to agree to a recession on February 14, 1824 , which severely restricted the city's self-government. In the future, a count commissioner was appointed who attended all council meetings and had extensive rights.
From 1800 onwards, the mayor was elected for several years.
After the end of the Holy Roman Empire
On February 3, 1811, Prince Friedrich zu Waldeck issued new town regulations. After that, the mayor should be appointed by the prince for life. He had to be a citizen of Korbach and a fully qualified lawyer. The duties of the previous pfennig master should be taken over by an economics mayor. The last ruling mayor, Friedrich Ludwig Buhl, was appointed mayor of the economy, Wilhelm Waldeck. This regulation met with fierce opposition from the city and was replaced in 1823 by an annual election of the mayor by the guilds.
After the March Revolution , a new municipal code for the Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont was passed on April 27, 1850. After that, a municipal council was elected in free and equal elections, which elected the mayor and the aldermen for six years each. With the municipal ordinance of August 1, 1855 (Reg.-Bl. 239), the three-class voting right was introduced; But it remained with the election of the mayor by the municipal council. After the November Revolution , the municipal council was again determined in free and equal elections from 1919 onwards. Women's suffrage was newly introduced .
