The title was first mentioned in 1534, after the Auxiliary Bishops Act, there referred to as Pereth. From there until 1888 the title was vacant and in the same year it was added to the Diocese of Ripon. The actual title was turned towards Richmond, where it remained from 1889 to 1939.
