List of the bishops of Penrith

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Bishops of Penrith represents the episcopal titleholders of the Church of England , the Diocese of Carlisle, in the Province of York . The title was named after the city of Penrith .

The title was first mentioned in 1534, after the Auxiliary Bishops Act, there referred to as Pereth. From there until 1888 the title was vacant and in the same year it was added to the Diocese of Ripon. The actual title was turned towards Richmond, where it remained from 1889 to 1939. In 1939 the title passed to the Diocese of Carlisle.
