List of honorary citizens of Cologne
The city of Cologne has granted honorary citizenship to 24 people since 1856 .
As early as 1823, the Cologne City Council had awarded the art collector Ferdinand Franz Wallraf with an oak wreath as a citizen's crown and given him a cup of honor. Later, the term "ore citizen" was coined for Wallraf, which is equivalent to a preliminary form of honorary citizenship.
Between 1933 and 1945 Paul von Hindenburg , Adolf Hitler , Hermann Göring , Robert Ley , Alfred Rosenberg and Joseph Goebbels were also honorary citizens of the city of Cologne. At its meeting on April 27, 1989, the city council decided unanimously that the resolutions passed during the Nazi era to grant honorary citizenship were void from the start.
Note: The listing takes place chronologically according to the date of the award by decision of the Council of the City of Cologne
