List of honorary citizens of Kempten (Allgäu)

The honorary citizenship is the highest municipal award of the city of Kempten (Allgäu) . It is awarded to citizens who have rendered services to the city and the common good. In addition to honorary citizenship, the city also awards a citizen's medal and, since 2012, a ring of honor.

Since 1847 the following people have been made honorary citizens.

  1. Peter Gries
    Government Building Council
    Awarded on December 3, 1847
    Gries was honored for his services in building the new Iller Bridge.
  2. Joseph Völk (born May 9, 1819 in Mittelstetten, † January 22, 1882 in Augsburg)
    Kgl. Advocate
    Awarded on May 31, 1880
    Völk was a member of the Reichstag from 1871 to 1881 and a member of the state parliament from 1855 to 1882. He was granted honorary citizenship for his services as a member of parliament.
  3. Winfried Hörmann von Hörbach (born June 25, 1821 - † October 21, 1896)
    District President
    Awarded in September 1885
    Hörmann was made an honorary citizen for his work as a representative of the people. He was also an honorary citizen of Memmingen, Augsburg, Günzburg, Lindau (Lake Constance) and Nördlingen.
  4. Otto von Bismarck

    Awarded on March 4, 1895
    As in many other German cities, Bismarck was made an honorary citizen on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
  5. Adolf Horchler (born January 8, 1849 in Regensburg; † January 12, 1929 in Straubing)
    Councilor
    Awarded on January 27, 1919
    Horchler was mayor of Kempten from 1881 to 1919. For his work in this office he was granted honorary citizenship.
  6. Johann Leonhard Kluftinger (born April 16, 1843 in Kempten (Allgäu), † July 20, 1930 in Bologna)
    Consul, merchant
    Awarded on May 4, 1923
    Kluftinger was honored as a benefactor. It is thanks to him that the Keck Chapel has been preserved.
  7. Max Förderreuther (born November 10, 1857 in Bamberg, † February 11, 1933 in Kempten (Allgäu))
    Head of studies, local researcher
    Awarded on April 3, 1925
    The award was made for his services as a local researcher and music director.
  8. Emil Blenk (born October 18, 1861 in Kempten (Allgäu), † June 27, 1941 in Geneva)

    Blenk was recognized as a great benefactor.
  9. Hermann Esser (born July 29, 1900 in Röhrmoos near Dachau ; † February 7, 1981 in Dietramszell )
    Founding member of the NSDAP local group Kempten, after 1933 temporarily Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs

    Honored as a pioneer of the National Socialist movement in the Allgäu.

    Weitnauer was made an honorary citizen for his services to the care of the homeland, as an author on Allgäu and Kempten history and as a publishing director.

    Wehr was made an honorary citizen for his services as mayor and for the introduction and further organizational management of the Allgäu Festival Week .

    On his 80th birthday, Höß was made an honorary citizen for his services as Lord Mayor of the city of Kempten.

Incorporated places

As part of the regional reform, the communities of Sankt Mang and St. Lorenz were incorporated into the city of Kempten on July 1, 1972. Until the incorporation, the following honorary citizens were appointed in both localities.
