This list shows honorary citizens who received this honor in the Saxon town of Radebeul or in the town of Kötzschenbroda , which was an independent town until 1935 , today a district of Radebeul.

List of honorary citizens

The awards started in 1924, when both Radebeul and Kötzschenbroda were granted city rights. Since then, both Kötzschenbroda, but only until their union with Radebeul in 1935, have granted honorary citizenship to personalities of their time by resolution of their city council or council assembly .

The only two non-politically motivated honorary citizenships went to the entrepreneur, inventor and important patron Johannes Wilhelm Hofmann on the company's 25th anniversary in 1927 and, as the first after the unification of the two cities, in 1956 to the painter Paul Wilhelm on his 70th birthday.

At the time of National Socialism, as was common in many cities at the time, Adolf Hitler and the responsible Reich Governor were also honorary citizens of both cities. It is currently not known whether the city council actively revoked their status after May 1945 , but it happened at least passively "in accordance with Article VIII, Section II, Letter i of Directive 38 of the Allied Control Council in Germany of October 12, 1946".

Certificate of Honor

On the occasion of Liselotte Schler's 80th birthday , the “walking Radebeul encyclopedia”, in 1998, the city of Radebeul awarded her a certificate of honor “in recognition of outstanding achievements in researching and presenting the history of the city of Radebeul”.

Potential honorary citizens

On the occasion of the 60th birthday of Hans Stosch-Sarrasani sen. (1873–1934), the founder of the internationally renowned Sarrasani Circus , the Radebeul Garden Street was given Sarrasani's name, which was reversed in 1945. A decision to make him an honorary citizen of the city could no longer be realized due to the unexpected death of Sarrasani, who was in São Paulo / Brazil.

On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Klara May (1864–1944), widow, general heir and executor of Karl May's will , she should be made an honorary citizen of Radebeul, according to the proposal by Angela Hammitzsch , wife of Martin Hammitzsch , half-sister of Adolf Hitler and friend of Klara May. When the Mayor of Radebeul Heinrich Severit forwarded this proposal for clarification, the Gauleiter and Reich Governor Martin Mutschmann intervened personally. The reason was probably the suspicions against Klara May's first husband and Karl May's friend Richard Plöhn as a "half-Jew" who had been lying in the Plöhn-May communal grave until 1942 and because of which the great celebrations for Karl May's 100th birthday were canceled not to compromise already invited "NS greats".
