List of endemics in Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The goiter , one of 14 endemic fish species

The following list contains the 39 Swiss endemics , i.e. species or subspecies that occur exclusively in Switzerland . Of these, 33 are animal and 6 plant species. There are also 138 partial endemic species, i.e. species whose populations are limited to Switzerland and relatively narrow areas of neighboring countries. Many other species ( 580 in the Fauna Europaea database alone) are also specified exclusively for Switzerland, but these are species from poorly researched or taxonomically insufficiently processed groups of species, so that the limited distribution is possibly only faked on the basis of knowledge; these species were not included in the list.

The small-scale distribution of the endemics is due to their geological survival, especially during the last ice ages , at suitable locations in the Alps or in the karst .
