The Palestinian territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip were after the signing of the Gaza-Jericho Agreement in Cairo in three areas (Area A, Area B and Area C) and 16 on 4 May 1994 governorates ( Arabic محافظة muhāfaza , DMG muḥāfaẓa ) and placed under the legal jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority (PNA).
