The former Portuguese colonial area was occupied by India on December 19, 1961 and from March 16, 1962 it was administered together with Daman and Diu as the Indian Union Territory "Goa, Daman and Diu". On May 30, 1987 it was divided into the independent state of Goa and the union territory of Daman and Diu .
