Khurshed Alam Khan

Khurshed Alam Khan ( Hindi खुर्शीद आलम खान Khurśīd Ālam Khān ; born February 5, 1919 in Pitaura, British India ; † July 20, 2013 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), who between 1974 and 1984 Member of the Rajya Sabha and from 1980 to 1989 Minister of State in several departments. He was then a member of the Lok Sabha between 1984 and 1989 and successively from 1989 to 1991 governor of Goa and between 1991 and 1999 with brief interruptions governor of Karnataka and also from 1996 to 1997 governor of Kerala . At the same time he was administrator of Daman and Diu from 1989 to 1991 and also administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli .

Life

Member of the Rayja Sabha and Minister of State

Khan, who comes from the village of Pitaura in the Farrukhabad district of today's Uttar Pradesh state , first completed a degree at Agra University and a short course in management studies at Pennsylvania State University and later worked as an agricultural scientist, social worker and political advisor. On October 12, 1945 he married Saeeda Hussain, a daughter of the future President of India Zakir Hussain . This marriage resulted in three daughters and his only son Salman Khurshid , who was Foreign Minister of India from 2012 to 2014 .

On April 16, 1974, Khan became a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament , and was a member of this until April 15, 1980. On July 5, 1980, he was again a member of the Rajya Sabha and belonged to it until December 6, 1984.

In October 1980, Khan was appointed Minister of State for Trade by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and held this office until January 1982. He was then Minister of State for Tourism and Civil Aviation between January and September 1982, before he was Minister of State for Tourism from September 1982 to February 1983. Afterwards he was again Minister of State for Tourism and Civil Aviation between February 1983 and December 1984. During this time he was temporarily chairman of the World Tourism Organization .

Member of the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Other Engagement

In the elections in December 1984 , Khan was elected to the INC in the Uttar Pradesh constituency 40 Farrukhabad as a member of Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament. He was a member of the Lok Sabha until the elections in November 1989 .

On December 31, 1984 he was appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and held this office until July 18, 1989.

In addition, he was involved in various functions for the interests of Muslims and was chairman of the minority department of the Congress Party, the Hajj committee in the Union territory of Delhi and the advisory committee there for Urdu . He was also chairman of the supervisory board of the Institute of Engineering in Faridabad .

Furthermore, he worked for numerous institutions that were dedicated to his father-in-law Zakir Hussain, such as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dr. Zakir Hussain Memorial College in Delhi, member of the Dr. Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust and the Executive Committee of Dr. Zakir Hussain Educational and Cultural Foundation .

Governor of Goa, Karnataka and Kerala

On July 18, 1989 Khan succeeded Gopal Singh as governor of the state of Goa and held this office until his replacement by Bhanu Prakash Singh on March 17, 1991. In addition, he was also the administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and at the same time administrator of the Union territory of Daman and Diu .

As the successor to Bhanu Pratap Singh , he became governor of the state of Karnataka on January 6, 1991 and held this position for almost nine years until December 1, 1999, with the office being replaced by Sam Piroj Bharucha from May 30, 1992 to June 27, 1992 as well as by Madhav Laxman Pendse between December 1, 1995 and December 21, 1995. On December 2, 1999, VS Ramadevi succeeded him as governor of Karnataka.

In addition to his function as governor of Karnataka, Khan also succeeded Fr Shiv Shankar as governor of the state of Kerala on May 5, 1996 and remained in this post until he was replaced by Sukhdev Singh Kang on January 25, 1997.
