PC Alexander

PC Alexander ( Padinjarethalakal Cherian Alexander ; Malayalam പി. സി. അലക്സാണ്ടർ ; born March 20, 1921 in Pathanamthitta , Travancore ; † August 10, 2011 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian diplomat and politician who, among other things, served as high commissioners between 1985 and 1988 in the United Kingdom , was Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1988 to 1990 , Governor of Maharashtra between 1993 and 2002 and also Governor of Goa from 1996 to 1998 .

Before the presidential election on July 15, 2002 , he was initially considered a possible candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the office of president . However, the BJP withdrew the candidacy after it became clear that the Indian National Congress (INC) would not support Alexander's application.

Life

Studied, civil servant and high commissioner in London

After attending school, Alexander first completed an undergraduate degree , which he completed with a Master of Arts. A post-graduate studies of the literature he initially finished with a Master of Litterature (M.Litt.) And then with a doctorate (D.Litt.).

After India gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, Alexander entered the civil service in 1948 and was, among other things, Senior Advisor at the United Nations (UN) in New York City between 1963 and 1966 . He later headed the UN project in Tehran between 1970 and 1974 and, after his return to India, was Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce from 1975 to 1978. In 1978 he returned to the UN and served until 1981, initially as a Senior Advisor and finally as Assistant Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN International Trade Center in Geneva , before becoming First Secretary to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1981 . He also held this office after Indira Gandhi's assassination in 1984 with her son and successor as Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, until 1985.

In 1985, Alexander succeeded VA Seyid Muhammad as High Commissioner in the United Kingdom and thus took over one of the most important diplomatic posts until 1988.

Governor and member of the Rajya Sabha

On February 17, 1988, Alexander, who was also awarded an honorary doctorate in literary studies, succeeded Sundar Lal Khurana as governor of the state of Tamil Nadu and held this office until his replacement by Surjit Singh Barnala on May 24, 1990.

The years later he succeeded C. Subramaniam Governor of Maharashtra on January 12, 1993 and held this post as Governor of this state until he was replaced by Chunilal Karsandas Thakker on July 13, 2002. At the same time, he became Governor of July 19, 1996 Goa and thus successor to Romesh Bhandari . He remained in this post until January 16, 1998 and was replaced by TR Satish Chandran the following day .

Before the presidential election on July 15, 2002, he was initially considered a possible candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the office of president. However, the BJP withdrew the candidacy after it became clear that the Indian National Congress (INC) would not support Alexander's application. Thereupon the BJP named the previous Vice President Krishan Kant as its presidential candidate.

Alexander then became a non-party member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament , on July 29, 2002 , and represented the state of Maharashtra until April 2, 2008. During this time he was the chairman of the Rajya Sabha Industry Committee from November 2002 to April 2008.

His marriage to Ackama Alexander resulted in two sons and two daughters.
