Evangelical Peace Church

Evangelical Peace Church Tauberstrasse 10 1948–49, 1962 (tower), 1999 (interior renovation) The Evangelical Peace Church is a former emergency church that was built by Otto Bartning in 1948–49.

The head of the Evangelical Church's aid organization commissioned the Karlsruhe-based architect Otto Bartning to develop a design that, thanks to the possibility of self-help and the use of rubble, represented a more cost-effective alternative in the long term. The funds for the construction of the churches in the four zones of occupation were donated primarily by the Lutheran World Federation.

The Friedenskirche in Karlsruhe-Weiherfeld is one of these so-called "emergency churches" that were built according to Bartning's designs. There are still 41 churches of this type all over Germany, for which Bartning had developed an inexpensive building system. Many of these churches have since changed significantly. The Friedenskirche is one of the examples that have essentially preserved the character of these emergency churches in the church space and that impressively illustrate the content of the program and the design intent.

The Friedenskirche in Weiherfeld was inaugurated in November 1949 without a tower. In 1958, the Karlsruhe architect Erich Rossmann raised the basement and turned it into community rooms. At the same time, he built the lower-lying parish hall to the northwest, with a kindergarten on the level of the basement of the church. In 1962 he added the tower.
