The competition for the design of the monument was won by the artist Egon Gutmann (d. 1955), who designed the monument with the architect Bruno Laurson. Among the applicants was the sculptor and artist Karl Seckinger (died 1978) from Grötzingen . Gutmann's sculpture was initially located in the old cemetery, which has already been disused. Due to the development of the cemetery area in the 1950s, it was moved in front of the school on Augustenburgstrasse and came to its current location in 2016. Protected according to § 2 DSchG
