from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of nature reserves in Rhineland-Palatinate lists the 520 (as of April 2015) designated areas in Rhineland-Palatinate. In total they occupy 26,140 hectares, which corresponds to 1.3% of the country's area.

There are nature reserves in all rural districts and in most of the independent cities, only in the districts of the independent cities Frankenthal (Pfalz) , Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Pirmasens and Speyer no nature reserves are designated.

According to Section 17 of the State Nature Conservation Act from 2005, nature reserves can be set up for the following reasons:

  1. to maintain, develop or restore biotopes or communities of certain wild animal and plant species,
  2. for scientific, natural history or cultural reasons or
  3. because of their rarity, particular character or outstanding beauty

Nature reserves are enacted in Rhineland-Palatinate by ordinance of the upper nature conservation authority. Since January 1, 2000, the Structure and Approval Directorate North and the Structure and Approval Directorate South have performed the tasks of the upper nature conservation authority. Previously, the district governments of the respective administrative districts were responsible.
