225 Dortmund stumbling blocks

The list of stumbling blocks in Dortmund contains stumbling blocks that were laid by Gunter Demnig in Dortmund as part of the art project of the same name . They are intended to commemorate the victims of National Socialism who lived and worked in Dortmund.

The first stumbling blocks in Dortmund were laid on October 19, 2005 in the Husen district . They remember Erich and Kurt Meyer, who lived at Husener Str. 63. The relocation took place on the initiative of a working group from the Husen secondary school.

This list contains all 309 stones laid up to and including July 8, 2019 according to the official list of the youth ring of the city of Dortmund, as well as two more stones that were laid in August 2020, for a total of 311.

Julius Steinweg ran a household goods store in the house on Aplerbecker Marktplatz 3. The family consisting of Julius, his wife Martha, their daughter Margret and their sons Hans and Herbert lived in the house at Aplerbecker Marktplatz 6. Julius Steinweg was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 because he was accused of having contacts with the KDP. From prison he organized his family's escape to Holland and escaped there himself. In Holland the family was the first to be registered as a Jewish refugee . In 1943 Julius, Martha and Margret Steinweg were transported to the Westerborg concentration camp and then immediately further to Auschwitz, where they were gassed. The sons Hans and Herbert were able to survive underground in Holland with a false name.

After the Steinweg family had fled, Otto Lenneberg took over the Steinweg family's business. Otto Lenneberg, also of Jewish faith, but not his wife Franziska. The children Ursula and Walter were brought up in the Jewish faith and were therefore regarded as valid Jews . Otto Lenneberg and his son Walter were transported to Auschwitz on October 1, 1944 and immediately gassed. Ursula Lenneberg was transported to Auschwitz on October 23, 1944, she survived, found her mother, and both emigrated to the United States.

Max Sternheim was born in this house and lived there for most of his life. Later it also belonged to him. He was married to Johanna, who died in 1939 in the Hörder Josephshospital. They had two children, the daughter Bertha and the son Karl. Karl Sternheim had already moved to Aachen in 1933, he survived the war, daughter Bertha first moved to Hamburg, later she married to Wuppertal. Sternheim worked in different professions. He was listed as a conditor, merchant or cattle dealer. After the death of his wife he moved to Wuppertal near his daughter. There he changed apartments several times, after all he lived in a Jewish old people's home. In 1942 he was deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp, where he died eight months later. In 1935 he moved to Burgwall 27. A neighbor denounced him to the police, and other reports also confirm that Damm was homosexual, which was a crime in the 3rd Reich. Damm saw no way out and drowned himself in the dysentery while the investigation was still ongoing; his body was recovered on August 20, 1936.

He took part in the First World War as a soldier and developed an aversion to the military during this time. He was an active communist and was arrested for half a year in 1933. His statement that he thought the war was lost was enough to arrest him on February 17th, 1943 and to sentence him to death on July 27th, 1943 for "preparing for high treason" and for "undermining military strength". He was executed with the guillotine on January 4, 1944 in the court prison in Dortmund.

Paul Weber came from a Christian family home. Paul Weber learned blacksmithing and locksmithing from his father. During the First World War he suffered an eye problem as a soldier. In Cologne he completed his training as a musician. He wrote his own lyrics, sang in the church choir of the Brackeler St. Clemens congregation and also played the organ there. He joined the resistance group around his neighbor Erich Mörchel. The Weber family temporarily hid the Jewish woman Charlotte Temming. Paul Weber was betrayed to the Gestapo, arrested on February 19, 1945 and murdered during Holy Week in Dortmund's Bittermark .

When it was first installed, the stumbling block bore the inscription "Here lived ...", this text is not included in the current version.

The Altmann family came to Dortmund from Wuppertal in mid-1932 and lived in different places, most recently on Gneisenaustrasse, before they fled to Nancy in France at the end of August 1933. The family was arrested there on October 15, 1942 and deported to Auschwitz on November 4, 1942. She was then considered missing, the family members were declared dead with effect from May 8, 1945.

It is not exactly known since when the Meyer family lived in Husener Strasse, traces go back to the 1920s. Kurt Meyer was born on July 23, 1897 in Oeynhausen, he was a horse commissioner. His wife Anna, née Marker, came from Westick and was not Jewish. They had a son Kurt, born on January 17, 1921. He was a soldier. The Meyers' business was attacked during the night of the pogrom and then "Aryanized". Erich and Kurt were deported by the Nazis - probably after 1942. Erich's fate is unclear, he was initially considered missing and was later declared dead. Kurt's stay in various concentration camps is documented; he was murdered in Mauthausen concentration camp . Anna Meyer survived and moved to Castrop-Rauxel in 1946.

In the house Chausseestr. 13, today Köln-Berliner Str. 13, lived the Andres family, consisting of the parents Josef and Margarete Andres, the daughters Hertha and Hildegard and the son Walter. Josef Andres died in April 1935 in the Josef Hospital in Hörde. After his death, Margarete and Hertha first moved to Ostenhellweg 32, where Walter also moved, and later to Reichenbach in Vogtland, where the older daughter Hildegard already lived. Margarete Andres was deported from Berlin to Theresienstadt, where she was murdered on August 1, 1943. A little later, Hertha, now Katzenstein, was transported to Auschwitz. Nothing more is known about her life; she was pronounced dead on April 30, 1943 in 1958. Hildegard married a second time in Berlin in 1942.She was transported to Auschwitz in March 1943 and later declared dead together with her sister. Walter Andres moved to Saarland in 1933, but returned to Dortmund in 1934. In 1938 he married Emmi Rosenthal. In 1942 the couple were deported to Riga. After that there is only uncertain information. Walter Andres is said to have starved to death during an evaluation transport. The date of death was given as April 30, 1045.

Even if the household register at Köln-Berliner Str. 16 is illegible, there is an entry for Moritz Arensberg at this address in the address book for 1908. He lived here with his wife Hedwig and their five children Julius, Rosa, Emilie, Martha and Siegfried. Moritz Arensberg died on December 3, 1934 and in 1939 the other members of the family moved to Ruinsstrasse 1. Siegfried moved to Unna and in 1940 married Hildegard Elkan. They moved to Werne and a year later they were deported to Riga on the Münster-Osnabrück-Bielefeld transport. Both are listed as dead on the transport. However, there is still an entry from Hildegard Arensberg in 1944, she can be found on the transport list to the Stutthof concentration camp , but after that there is no further evidence of her survival. Emilie Arensberg married Max David from Wuppertal in 1939 and moved to Wuppertal. After living in Cologne in 1940, her brother Julius moved to the David family in Wuppertal and in November 1941 Emilie and Max David and Julius Arensberg were deported to Minsk. There are no further records of them. In March 1941 Hedwig moved with Martha and Rosa to Sölder Kirchweg 27 and in April they and all the other Jewish residents of the house were forced to go to Dortmund-Huckarde in an emergency shelter in Parsevalstrasse. 8 to draw. Hedwig was deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp in July 1942 and to the Treblinka extermination camp in September 1942 . There are no other records of her. The two daughters Martha and Rosa were deported to Riga in January 1942. They are considered missing and are listed on the list of the dead in the Riga memorial book.

Before the war, the Jewish Apfel family lived in the house on Mallinckrodtstrasse. 111. They were forced to sell their house and give up their toy and house goods store on Steinplatz and moved into a small apartment on Munsterstrasse. The youngest daughter fled to England a week before the start of the war, the parents and the oldest brother were deported to Riga in 1942 and murdered, only the younger brother survived. The stumbling block was laid on August 13, 2010 in the presence of Gunter Demnig's youngest daughter in Mallinckrodtstrasse, but not in front of house no. 111, but further east on the edge of the Nordmarkt elementary school's playground.

Walter Löwenstein married Johanna Viets in 1931, who was not Jewish. A daughter emerged from this marriage. Löwenstein was initially protected by this "privileged marriage" and took over his Jewish parents' butcher business in Märtmannstrasse. 40 and worked as a butcher until 1939. The company was closed in 1939, Löwenstein was obliged to do forced labor and in September 1944 deported to a labor camp in Weißenfels with other male Jews who lived in “privileged marriage”. In mid-February he was sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. His name is on the lists of survivors, but he did not return home. According to statements made by surviving Jews in Theresienstadt, Lilli Schlick and Pinkas Medaljon, who knew him personally, he died there of typhus . Medaljon said he saw his body and that he was cremated in the crematorium. According to the statement, he was judicially declared dead effective May 31, 1945.

On July 19, 1940, their parents were admitted to the Judenhaus at Lindenstrasse 45 and their son Ludwig to the Judenhaus at Westenhellweg 121. From there all family members were deported to Riga on January 27, 1942. In 1943 there are still entries for Paula and David Schöneberg, but they cannot be found in the death list. They are considered missing and were declared dead by the Hörde District Court in 1948 with the date May 8, 1945. The son Ludwig survived the concentration camp and emigrated to Australia. The Gollubier family consisted of five people, the parents Hermann and Bertha and the three sons Alfred Aron, Ewald and Herbert. The father Hermann died in 1934, after that there are only imprecise records about the life of Bertha and her sons. In 1940/1941 they moved to Stiftstrasse 15. Bertha was transported to Theresienstadt on July 25, 1942, and to Treblinka two months later. There is no further record of her life; she was probably murdered on the transport. Alfred Aron is listed in the list of deaths of the transport from December 13, 1941 from Münster-Osnabrück-Bielefeld to Riga, as are Ewald and Anna Gollubier, née. Windmüller, probably Ewald's wife. Alfred and Ewald can be found in the Stutthof concentration camp list in 1944 . Ewald probably perished there towards the end of the war. The further fate of Alfred Aron and Herbert is unclear. Possibly they were transported to Auschwitz.

Alex Rosenthal was a butcher by trade. The family included his wife Agnes and the single Berta Rosenthal. In 1938 the widowed Emma Süssenwein, née Rosenthal, moved in and from 1941 for a short time also Hedwig Arensberg, née. Rosenthal with her daughters Rosa and Martha. Then all were to Parsevalstr. 8 brought. Their furniture and supplies were smashed during this transport.
