The government of Óscar Arias Sánchez recognized the government in Beijing on June 1, 2007 . On August 23, 2007 Wang Xiaoyuang (born 1953) opened the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in San José . The embassy in Beijing opened on October 25, 2007. A free trade agreement between the PRC and Costa Rica was signed on April 8, 2010, which came into force on August 1, 2011.
