In the Middle Ages, the castle served as the service yard of Rein Abbey . From the 16th century it was used as a noble seat. After frequent changes of ownership, the property has been owned by the City of Graz since 1967. The closed four-wing complex with a square inner courtyard has its oldest components in the south wing with a basement. The pillar arcades were walled up over time; the round corner tower visible in an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer no longer exists. In the 19th century, a square corner tower was added to the structure and a chapel was set up on the upper floor.
