The branch church stands, surrounded by the cemetery, on the valley floor to the southwest under the village of Mariapfarr at the location of the Lungau original parish (754). The baroque central building was rebuilt in 1744 and consecrated in 1759. It is slightly elongated in the longitudinal axis and carries a roof turret with an onion helmet. The high altar, marked 1748, completely fills the chancel inside the church.

The parish church is surrounded by a high cemetery wall in the center of the village and is a large Gothic building with a Romanesque core. The basilica, three-aisled nave is late Gothic, the retracted choir dates from the middle of the 14th century. The massive Romanesque choir tower was rebuilt in Gothic style after a fire in 1854. In the tower there are still fragments of the late Romanesque painting from around 1220, and paintings from around 1360 in the choir. Parts of a late Gothic winged altar are integrated into the neo-Gothic high altar. The side altars and the pulpit date from the Baroque period.
