The Waltra cave is probably a settlement from the Copper Age that was buried by a rock fall around 4500 years ago. Another thesis is based on a collapsed cave. In the small-scale cavities below the many tons of heavy basalt rock, in the course of the investigations carried out by the Landesmuseum Joanneum (under W. Schmid) in 1935 , a flat and perforated ax made of green stone and a largely intact black-gray handle bowl made of finely slurried clay were found in addition to ceramic shards with furrow ornamentation found with elegant decoration in the form of recessed grooves and triangles on the neck and dome-shaped belly. The finds make the Waltra cave one of the most important and internationally best known sites of the so-called Retz-Gajary culture in Austria. This cultural area is between 2800 and 2400 BC. When copper first appeared as a material in Styria.
