history
In the 11th century at the latest, the first Benedictine convents were established in Piast castle settlements in Greater Poland ( Mogilno , Lubin). Cistercian ( Wągrowiec , Łekno) and Premonstratensian ( Strzelno ) monasteries followed in the 12th and 13th centuries . There were also branches of the Dominicans and Franciscans and other orders.
Almost all the monasteries remained in the 16th century. New branches of the Jesuits and other congregations followed, which were supposed to promote the Counter Reformation in the area.
In 1795 the area came after the | Second partition of Poland to the Kingdom of Prussia in the province of Posen . From 1807 to 1815 it belonged to the Polish Duchy of Warsaw , from 1815 mostly back to Prussia, Kujawien with Kalisz to the Russian Empire . The Prussian monasteries were almost all dissolved in the 1820s and 1830s, the Russian mostly in 1864 after the January uprising .
After the independence of Poland in 1919, several new branches were opened, and numerous others after 1945 and 1990.
