List of Imperial Generals of the Early Modern Period
The list of imperial generals of the early modern period includes all military personnel who were in the service of the Roman-German emperor and who commanded the imperial troops in the rank of general . They were subordinate to the Habsburgs and the Bavarian Elector ( House Wittelsbach , 1742–1745). Generals who were appointed after the end of the Holy Roman Empire in the Austrian Empire (from 1806) were not accepted. Generals of the Reich who were only appointed by the Reichstag were also not accepted .
NB: So far, the imperial generals of the 16th century have only been included sporadically.
General ranks
The generals of the Roman emperor had the following ranks:
- General-Capo or Generalissimo
- Lieutenant General (GL)
- Field Marshal (FM)
- Feldzeugmeister (FZM) or General of the Cavalry (GdK)
- Field Marshal Lieutenant (FML)
- Sergeant General (GFWM), from approx. 1770 Major General (GM)
- General Commander on horseback and on foot (17th century)
Reichsgeneralfeldmarschall (RGFM), Reichsfeldzeugmeister (RFZM) and Reichsgeneralfeldmarschalleutnant (RGFML) were ranks of the Reich that were appointed by the Reichstag.
The lists also include general ranks of other territories:
- General wagon master ( Electorate of Bavaria , Swabian Empire , Upper Rhine Empire , Franconian Empire )
- Brigadier ( Kingdom of Spain , Republic of the Seven United Provinces )
- Maréchal de camp (Kingdom of France)
