German streets and squares with namesake of Turkish origin or descent are a rarity in Germany, but due to immigration from Turkey they exist. The following list shows them sorted by city.

Named streets and squares

Duisburg

  • Fakir-Baykurt-Platz , named after the German-Turkish writer Fakir Baykurt . The square is in the Homberg district at the southern end of Schillerstrasse ( Lage ).

Frankfurt am Main

  • Hülya-Platz , named after Hülya Genc, ​​victim of the Solingen assassination attempt . The small square is located in the Bockenheim district between Friesengasse and Kleiner Seestrasse ( location ). It is the first place that commemorates a victim of neo-Nazis, namely the 9-year-old Hülya Genc who died on May 29, 1993 in an arson attack in Solingen together with four other victims. On the occasion of a demonstration against right-wing radicalism in 1995, a citizens' initiative set up a man-sized replica of the Hammering Man sculpture on the square and, after discussions in the local council, left it there for the time being. It showed the Hammering Man striking a swastika with a hammer. With a crank you could do the movements yourself. This mechanism has repeatedly been the victim of vandalism. In 2007 the monument was removed from the city of Frankfurt.

Hamburg

  • Kemal Altun Square , named after the political refugee Cemal Kemal Altun . The square is located in the northern part of Kassel at the confluence of Gottschalkstrasse and Mombachstrasse and was named in 1988. It is located directly in front of the buildings of the former slaughterhouse used as a cultural center ( Lage ).
  • The Halitplatz is after the murdered by neo-Nazis on 6 April 2006 Kassel Halit Yozgat named. It is located near the crime scene on Holländische Straße 81 and was inaugurated on October 1, 2012 ( Lage ).

Kiel

  • Bahide-Arslan-Platz , named after Bahide Arslan, victim of the Mölln arson attack . The square is located in the Gaarden-Ost district, roughly where Wikingerstraße joins Kaiserstraße, about 250 m southwest of the Volkspark ( location ). Kiel-Gaarden is a district of the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein that is heavily influenced by immigration and is considered a multicultural center, but also a social hotspot.

Cologne

  • Bahide-Arslan-Straße , named after Bahide Arslan (see Kiel, Bahide-Arslan-Platz). The street is located in the west of Cologne in the Ossendorf district and flows into Ossendorfer Weg ( Lage ).

Mölln

  • Bahide-Arslan-Gang , named after Bahide Arslan (see Kiel, Bahide-Arslan-Platz). The footpath connects the city center with the spa gardens ( location ).

Hamm

  • Afyonring, named after the Turkish city of Afyonkarahisar . Afyonkarahisar has been one of Hamm's partner cities since 2007 . The Afyonring connects Heessener Straße with the Sachsenweg / Sachsenring roundabout ( Lage ).

  • Ataturk Street , named after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , founder of modern Turkey and asylum seeker to Berlin Mayor Ernst Reuter during the time of the “Third Reich”.

Hamburg

  • Kemal-Altun-Platz , after Cemal Kemal Altun (cf. Kassel, Kemal-Altun-Platz), located in the middle of Ottensen ( location ). The place has long been unofficially named after Altun. Even the citizens of Hamburg use the name in their letters.
