Litchfield is a city in Montgomery County , Illinois , USA. The 2000 census counted 6815 inhabitants. The city is about 100 km north of St. Louis on Interstate Highway 55 , which connects St. Louis with Chicago . Litchfield was named after one of its founders, Electus Backus Litchfield.
Litchfield used to be an important through station on Route 66 . The Ariston Cafe is one of the oldest surviving restaurants along the historic route. It was first opened in 1924 in Carlinville , 20 kilometers away , but was later moved to its current location. The Ariston Cafe was inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame in 1992 and is now a popular stop for Route 66 tourists.
Another stop is Litchfield's Lake Lou Yaeger, a recreational, sports and fishing area northeast of town. The SkyView Drive-In Theater in Illinois is also a Route 66 Hall of Fame member and has been in existence since 1951.
Rail transport
The rail connection to the industrial area at the North American Pipe Corporation plant has been through the Illinois Terminal Railroad since November 2011 .
