Lititz is a municipal self-government unit ( borough ) in the southern US state of Pennsylvania in Lancaster County and is the seat of the oldest boarding school for girls in the United States.

history

The founder of the Moravian Brethren , Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf , visited Warwick (today a neighboring town of Lititz) in December 1742. Because of his sermons, one of the landowners (Georg Klein) converted to the Moravians. In 1754 Klein donated his entire farm with around 240 hectares to the Moravians. Members of the Moravian Brethren founded the settlement in 1756, which was named after Lititz Castle in today's Czech Republic in the Wildenschwert district .

Until 1855, only members of the Brethren were allowed to own houses here - other people were only allowed to rent houses. The Linden-Hall girls' boarding school, which has existed since 1794, is the oldest all-girls boarding school in the United States. The boarding school has been officially recognized since 1863.

In 1861, Julius Sturgis started making pretzels as the first in the United States . From 1865 to 2016, Lititz was the headquarters and production site of the Wilbur Chocolate Company .

From 1871 until his death (1880), the Californian pioneer Johann August Sutter lived in Lititz and at times in a hotel in Washington, DC, in order to advance his petition with the members of parliament and senators regarding compensation.

Lancaster County - including Lititz - is an area that belongs to whipping .

In 2013 Lititz was voted America's Coolest Small Town in a national competition run by the Budget Travel booking platform . There is the Lititz Pretzel Fest , which was supposed to be sponsored by the Kiwanis Club in 2020 , but was canceled that year due to the Corona crisis.

Five buildings and sites in the area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of March 27, 2020), including the Johann Agust Sutter House , the Julius Sturgis Pretzel House and the Lititz Moravian Historic District
