Little Big Adventure

Little Big Adventure: Twinsen's Adventure (often simply referred to as LBA) is an originally for the SNES planned, but in 1994 for MS-DOS and PlayStation published Adventure of Adeline Software. It was published in Europe by Electronic Arts and in the US by Activision .

This game is an isometric view of adventure using real 3D polygon models with small borrowings from the genres of role-playing games and platforming games . The environment can be explored freely within certain limits and offers a wide range of opportunities for interaction. After certain tasks have been completed, the story continues in fully rendered video sequences.

The characters in this game have a very high level of artificial intelligence for the time and react flexibly to the behavior of the protagonist, Twinsen. In order to achieve his goal, he has to pass through various levels with enemies, NPCs and tasks contained therein . There are four different behaviors (normal, athletic, aggressive and cautious) that influence his ability to move, fight and interact with others. The very extensive dialogues with the existing NPCs are fully spoken, but there was later a floppy disk version without language. As usual in adventure games, there are a small number of useful items that can be carried with you and used to solve tasks and puzzles.

There is a simple real-time combat system in action style, which uses the two weapons of the main hero, a saber and a magic ball, which he can throw in various ways, in addition to simple close combat actions such as kicks and punches. However, arguments are not a major aspect of the game, there are various invincible opponents and often sneaking past or some other solution is preferable. In addition, when Twinsen are discovered, opponents react intelligently and get help while they otherwise go about their normal activities.

Action and game world

The main character of the game is Twinsen, a quetch. In addition to the human-like squeezes, the planet Twinsun is also inhabited by Dickos (elephant-like), Haasis (hare-like) and chubby (short and spherical). Despite these harmless and childish-looking residents, the adventure follows an action-packed and sometimes subversive story: Twinsen, who repeatedly sees the end of the world in his dreams, is a freedom fighter under the dictator Dr. Funfrock imprisoned and is to be executed. After escaping from prison and returning home to his wife Zoe, she is kidnapped in front of his eyes.

Twinsen goes in search of her and travels the world of Twinsun, where he, partly with the support of other rebels, Dr. Funfrock's factories sabotaged. These include the clone center and the beam center (in the game this technology is incorrectly written as "Biemen") where Funfrock creates an army of clones and teleports their soldiers to various locations. To get his weapons and other equipment, Twinsen also has to visit mystical places such as the Bù temple under the desert sand or a mountain lake and even break into a museum once. On his journey, he also manages to free Zoe again, but Twinsun is only saved after Dr. Funfrock was defeated in a fight on a construction site where he had tried to tap divine energies inside Twinsun. The goddess Sendell then appears in person at the end of the game to express her thanks to Twinsen, and the residents freed from the dictatorship celebrate a big party together.

successor

In 1997 a successor called Little Big Adventure 2 - Twinsen's Odyssey from the same manufacturer appeared.

While the basic principle of the game was retained for a long time, there were also changes. Movements in the outer world of planets, which one could now travel to, were shown in a 3D environment. In addition, a significantly higher value was placed on clashes with opponents, for which the Twinsen arsenal was greatly enlarged.

The game is about an invasion of the Esmerians, who at first pretend to be peaceful visitors from space, but later kidnap all the magicians and children from all over Twinsun. Twinsen sets off to the home planet of the Esmerians and there uncovered a conspiracy in which the Emperor of the Esmerians and the supposedly resurrected god Dark Monk are involved. Eventually, Twinsen discovers that Dark Monk is in truth Dr Funfrock, who is once again aiming to destroy Twinsun and absorb the magical powers from inside the planet. However, Twinsen manages to eliminate both the Kaiser and Funfrock and prevent the destruction of Twinsun with the forces of Sendell and the support of the Esmerians.

Ports

Since 2014 there has been a chargeable port of LBA for Android and iOS from DotEmu in the Google Play Store and the AppStore. The implementation only takes into account the operation via touchscreen, an improved path-finding system is also mentioned as well as the compatibility with individual game controllers. The game mechanics were also adjusted.
