The Little Kanawha River has its source in southern Upshur County , 20 miles south of Buckhannon, and flows primarily in a northwesterly direction. It flows through the counties Lewis , Braxton , Gilmer , Calhoun , Wirt and Wood and finally flows into the Ohio River at Parkersburg .

The United States Army Corps of Engineers built a dam near Burnsville in 1976 , which has since dammed Burnsville Lake .
