The Little Muskingum River is a 105 km long right tributary of the Ohio River in the eastern US state of Ohio in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains . It drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio River and Mississippi River . The Little Muskingum River is part of the river system of the Mississippi River and drains an area of 816 square kilometers. The river has its source in the mountainous part of Monroe County about 13 km southeast of the village of Woodsfield and flows in a meandering manner parallel to the Ohio River at a distance of about 13 km until it flows into the Ohio 8 km southeast of the city of Marietta . Almost the entire course of the Little Muskingum River lies within the Wayne National Forest , which has been renatured in a former coal mining area . The area consists of three parts with a total circumference of around 34 km².
