action

The boy Jamal is a Pakistani Muslim who lives right on the border with India. This is secured by a heavily guarded minefield with Indian watchtowers. When playing cricket with his friends, the cricket ball falls into the minefield. Jamal crawls under the barbed wire fence to the ball. As gunfire rages, Jamal runs off and suddenly finds himself on the Indian side. He flees from the border guards who suspect him to be a terrorist. Jamal is hiding when a man with a bicycle appears in front of him. The border guards stop the man they suspect to be the wanted man. However, he takes off his headgear and it turns out that he is a Hindu Brahmin who says he is just coming from class. The man whose name is Bhola has long since seen Jamal and is sending the soldiers on the wrong track. Jamal tells him about the cricket game and joins him. He comes to Bhola's house unnoticed, but Bhola's niece Rani initially refuses to let him in because he is a Muslim. Only when the soldiers appear in the village to find the “terrorist” does she let him into the house. They hastily cut Jamal's hair and present him to the soldiers as a silent relative. The trick works. During the night Bhola and Rani bring Jamal back across the border. Rani can take Jamal to hug her in thanks. Bhola and Rani watch Jamal return to his family. The mother is furious that he appears so late and has cut off his hair. He starts to laugh under their blows and Bhola and Rani smile too as they disappear into the darkness of the night.
