Liu Chen (born January 3, 1946 in Hangzhou ) is a Chinese-born American plasma physicist who mainly works theoretically . He found new types of plasma waves and magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in tokamaks .

Life

Chen received his bachelor's degree from National Taiwan University in 1966 and his master's degree from Washington State University in Pullman in 1969 , where he was at the Electronics Research Laboratory. In 1972 he received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley and then was at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill. From 1974 he was at Princeton University in the Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), where he became a permanent member in 1974 and research physicist in 1974. In 1979 he became a lecturer at Princeton University with the rank of associate professor and in 1982 with full professorial rank and at the same time principal research physicist at the PPPL. 1986 to 1993 he was co-head of the theory department. In 1987 he was Miller Visiting Professor at Berkeley. From 1993 he was a professor at the University of California, Irvine . Since 2006 he has also been Director of the Institute for Theory and Simulation of Fusion and Professor at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou.

Chen is known for several fundamental contributions to theoretical plasma physics, fusion research, and laboratory and space plasmas. These include the discovery of kinetic Alfven waves, toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAE, Alfven Ballooning modes ) in tokamaks , energetic particle modes (EPM) and Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBM) in tokamaks, theory of geomagnetic pulsations, heating with Alfven waves in fusion plasmas, fishbone modes . He and Frieman developed a theory of nonlinear gyrokinetic equations, applied to the study of microturbulence in tokamaks, and made fundamental contributions to drift wave instabilities and plasma turbulence.

Honors, editorship and memberships

In 2008 he received the Hannes Alfvén Prize of the European Physical Society, in 2004 the APS Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research (especially for the theoretical discovery and experimental verification of toroidal induced Alfven eigenmodes) and in 2012 the James Clerk Maxwell Prize for plasma physics the American Physical Society (APS). He is a Fellow of the APS (1981), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2009) and the American Geophysical Union (2011).

From 1985 to 1988 he was co-editor of Physics of Fluids.
