Liu Wendian

Liu Wendian ( Chinese  劉文典  /  刘文典 , W.-G. Liu Wen-tien ; Zi: Shuya叔 雅; born December 1889 ; died July 15, 1958 ) was a Chinese philologist ( guoxuejia ) and educator. He was born in Hefei , Anhui, and his family was from Huaining , Anhui. Like Liu Shipei and Zhang Taiyan , he followed Sun Yat-sen and took part in the " Second Revolution ". In 1917, on Chen Duxius recommendation, he became a professor of Chinese culture at Peking University . In 1927 he directed the establishment of Anhui University . He later taught at Tsinghua University , United Southwest University, and Yunnan University . After the liberation, he was a professor at the national level and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference . Liu Wendian has made a contribution to researching some early Chinese texts , in particular the Zhuangzi and Huainanzi (by Liu An刘 安). His Zhuangzi buzheng 庄子 补正, for example, served as the basis for the translation by Burton Watson ( The complete works of Chuang Tzu , New York and London, 1968).

During his presidency at Anhui University, he once referred to Chiang Kai-shek as a "new warlord" (新 军阀).
