Live MCMXCIII -

Under the name Live MCMXCIII ( Rom. 1993 , which takes place this year, short-term reunification was) US avant - rock band The Velvet Underground documented.

History of origin

In 1971, The Velvet Underground was effectively dissolved: Maureen Tucker and Sterling Morrison were the last two members of the classic line- up. In the following years, John Cale and Lou Reed initially pursued their solo careers.

In the 1980s, the music of the early Velvet Underground experienced its renaissance; many artists from David Bowie to Bauhaus named the band as a source of inspiration. When Andy Warhol , the band's former sponsor, died in 1987, Reed and Cale began working together again for the first time in 19 years; In 1990 the song cycle Songs for Drella appeared as a musical biography, which was also performed in the same year.

In 1990 the four musicians played together again for the first time since 1968 at a Warhol exhibition, followed by two further appearances in 1992. From the recent collaboration arose the proposal for a comeback in the "classic" line-up of Reed, Cale, Morrison and Tucker. Doug Yule, who had replaced Cale from 1968 and had taken over the leadership of the band from 1970, was not included; he later said that he would probably have turned it down anyway for family reasons.

On the tour, in addition to the old pieces, some new compositions were played, including Velvet Nursery Rhyme , which was the theme of the band's reunion, and Coyote, written by Reed and Cale .

The band members had repeatedly emphasized in interviews that the tour should not be a basis for a renewed permanent collaboration. This was actually only short-lived, as the old disputes within the band soon flared up again; Reeds then wife Sylvia publicly referred to the other band members as "Lou's companion band". The last concert of the tour, which led through Europe for the first time in the history of the Velvet Underground, was played by the band on July 9, 1993 as the opening act for U2 .

Formats

The recordings on Live MCMXCIII come from the first three concerts at Olympia in Paris .
