history
Originally there was a village of Livingston, founded in the 12th century on the site of the later town, which was named after a Flemish merchant DeLeving. The ending -ton stands for town '[residential] place'. The merchant bought land here under King David I and later built a tower, of which, however, nothing has survived. The area remained agricultural until the 20th century.
After the end of the Second World War, New Towns were designed around the larger cities of the United Kingdom, which were supposed to provide a solution for the sometimes cramped living conditions in the British cities. Livingston was assigned the task of relieving Edinburgh and Glasgow. For this purpose, an urban development company, the Livingston Development Corporation, was set up. It was ensured that above all modern technology companies settled here. BSkyB maintained its largest call center here. Later on, retail trade and healthcare dominated the city. The construction of the city was in the hands of the Livingston Development Corporation until the 1990s, before responsibility was transferred to the West Lothian Council. The last major development project of the Livingston Development Corporation was the construction of the Almondvale Stadium, home of Livingston FC. In the meantime, the city has also received two neighboring shopping centers, the "Almondvale Shopping Center" and the "McArthur Glenn Designer Outlet Center", which are connected by an extension to consolidate its status as Scotland's largest shopping center and a campus for West Lothian College.
traffic
Livingston has direct access to the M8 ( Glasgow - Edinburgh ) motorway , which runs north of the city. The city also has two train stations: Livingston South on the Edinburgh-Glasgow line via Shotts , and Livingston North on the Edinburgh-Bathgate line.
education
In addition to the college mentioned, there are 17 elementary schools and 5 high schools in the city.
Sports
The city is home to the football club Livingston FC , which plays in the Scottish Premiership , the top football league in Scotland. Livingston is also home to the Livingston Rugby Football Club, two swimming teams and a hockey club.
