Lloyd John Old (born September 23, 1933 in San Francisco , † November 28, 2011 in New York City ) was an American immunologist .

Career

Old received his MD from the University of California, San Francisco in 1958. He then went to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as a Research Fellow . In 1973 he became an associate director there . Ten years later he was given the William E. Snee Chair in Cancer Immunology.

At Weill Cornell Medical College at Cornell University in New York City was an old professor. He was chairman of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and a member of numerous committees and advisory boards. Old was awarded honorary doctorates by several universities .

He died on November 28, 2011 in New York City of complications from prostate cancer .

Research areas

Old's main area of ​​research was cancer immunotherapy . He was one of the pioneers in this field. At the end of the 1950s he introduced the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin into cancer therapy . The tumor necrosis factors were discovered in his laboratory (published in 1975), and in 1979 he co-discovered p53 . Old was (co) author of over 600 publications.
