The Loðmundur is a lava dome in the highlands of Iceland . The mountain (1429 m) is part of the central volcano of the volcanic system of Kerlingarfjöll near the Highland Road Kjalvegur .
Among mountaineers and nature lovers, Loðmundur, the easternmost peak in the mountain range, is considered the most impressive. The mountain is relatively steep on all sides.
Volcanism
Lt. Ari Trausti Guðmundsson (2004) it consists of palagonite in the lower part and basalt lavas in the upper part . However, recent research from 2007 shows that the rock that makes up the base of the mountain is rhyolite .
Rockclimbing
Follow the path from the huts at Ásgarð towards Hveradalir . At the top of the saddle, turn left and it is best to stick to the edge of the small glaciers. From another saddle between Loðmundur and the neighboring summit Snótur you follow a palagonite ledge upwards. However, the rock belt that surrounds the summit can only be overcome in two or three places.
