Lode is a small village in East Cambridgeshire on the south end of the Fens . It is north of the B1102 between Quy and Swaffham Bulbeck , 13 km (8 miles) northeast of Cambridge . The smaller settlement Long Meadow is part of the municipality of Lode and is located east along the B1102.

Surname

A lode is an artificial canal for the drainage of the fens, which was already carried out in Roman times. The name of the village comes from its location at the south end of Bottisham Lode , which flows into the River Cam .

history

Lode is a comparatively young community because it was only separated from Bottisham in 1894 .

Anglesey Abbey

Lode is best known for the beautiful Anglesey Abbey , a former mansion of the family of 1st Baron Fairhaven . There is also a functioning watermill on the publicly accessible property owned by the National Trust .

church

The present church was built by the Reverend Hailstone, then owner and resident of Anglesey Abbey, and consecrated in 1853. The vicar of this church came from this family for the next 80 years.
