Lodewijk Woltjer

Lodewijk Woltjer (born April 26, 1930 in Noordwijk ; † August 25, 2019 in Geneva ) was a Dutch astronomer .

Woltjer was the son of the astronomer Jan Woltjer . He studied in Leiden , where he in 1957 January Oort with a thesis on the Crab Nebula was awarded his doctorate. Research stays at various American universities and the appointment as professor for theoretical astrophysics and plasma physics in Leiden followed.

From 1964 to 1974 he was Rutherford Professor of Astronomy and Head of the Astronomy Department at Columbia University in New York.

From 1975 to 1987 he was Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), where he initiated the construction of the Very Large Telescope , and from 1994 to 1997 President of the International Astronomical Union .

Woltjer was awarded the Karl Schwarzschild Medal in 1987 . In 1980 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . Since 1990 he has been an elected member of the Academia Europaea and since 1994 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
