The Lohmühlenbrücke leads over the Neuköllner Schiffahrtskanal in Berlin and connects the Maybachufer at the corner of Weichselstrasse in Neukölln with Lohmühlenstrasse in Treptow . In the 18th century , there were loaf mills here , in which tree bark (" Lohe ") was processed into bark flour.

Location and history

Immediately north of the Lohmühlenbrücke, the Neukölln shipping canal flows into the Landwehr canal . There, the border runs to the district Kreuzberg of the district Friedrich-Kreuzberg . Because of this location, the location is sometimes referred to as the "triangle".

The connection via the canal was heavily frequented, with the construction of the Berlin Wall across the Lohmühlenbrücke the important connection to Harzer Straße was interrupted. This could only be insufficiently compensated for by the construction of a pedestrian bridge, the Kiehlsteg built in 1962 . This pedestrian crossing was only 60 meters away from the Lohmühlenbrücke.

In 1988, Lohmühlenplatz, east of the bridge, changed formally to West Berlin through a territory swap . This enabled the bridge to be renovated by 1989. A drivable connection was created between the Harzer Straße, which belongs to Neukölln, and the Maybachufer. Against the protest of a citizens' initiative, the Kiehlsteg was torn down in 2014 because it was no longer needed after the opening of the Wall and to save maintenance costs.

Others

  • The bridge shows Neukölln's coat of arms on both sides as well as - in Roman numerals - the year of its construction (MCMXX corresponding to 1920).
  • In 1987 one of the key scenes of the feature film Der Himmel über Berlin by Wim Wenders was filmed on this bridge .
  • Along the Landwehr Canal in the direction of the Spree there are a total of 45 cherry trees that were part of a large fundraising campaign by a Japanese television station. As a joy at the end of the German division, around one million euros were collected under the title Sakura-Campaign from 1990, with which over 9,000 trees were planted in selected, symbolic locations.
