Lojze Kovačič (born November 9, 1928 in Basel , Switzerland ; † May 1, 2004 in Ljubljana , Slovenia ) was a Slovenian writer and educator .

Life

Lojze Kovačič spent his childhood in Basel, where his father, a Slovenian from Carniola , and his mother, a German from Saarland , ran a skinning workshop. Since his father did not take on Swiss citizenship, he and his family were expelled from Switzerland to Slovenia ( Kingdom of Yugoslavia ) in 1938 . At first the family lived with the father's brother in the country, then in Ljubljana under the poorest conditions and under constant threat. After his father died soon afterwards, Lojze Kovačič worried about his mother and sister, who were both expelled as Germans from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia at the end of the Second World War and died in a DP camp . Kovačič decided to stay in Ljubljana, learned the Slovene language, became a writer and worked as a teacher. He wrote and staged plays with young people at the Center for Youth Culture in Ljubljana.

He describes his life from 1938 to 1946 in his novel trilogy Die Zugereisten , the volumes of which were published in German translation from 2004 to 2006. In 2016, the Slovenian Writers' Association posthumously published its text Basel (third fragment), which was translated into German , in which Kovačič links the impressions of his first visit to Basel in 1972 after 34 years with his childhood memories in Basel.

In his homeland, Kovačič is one of the most important novelists of Slovenian modernism. From 1997 he was an associate member of the Slovenian Academy of Science and Art.
