from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lola Álvarez Bravo , née Dolores Martínez Vianda, also Martínez de Anda (born April 3, 1907 in Lagos de Moreno , Jalisco ; † July 31, 1993 in Mexico City ) was one of the first photographers in Mexico and alongside Tina Modotti , Frida Kahlo , Diego Rivera and her husband Manuel Álvarez Bravo were one of the key figures in Mexico's post-revolutionary cultural bloom.

life and work

Lola Álvarez Bravo spent her childhood and youth in Mexico City. In 1925 she married Manuel Álvarez Bravo, from whom she learned photography. During this time she also made the acquaintance of many important Mexican artists, including the painters Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco , Diego Rivera, and Rufino Tamayo, as well as the circle of poets known as Los Contemporáneos . Inspired by photographers like Edward Weston and Tina Modotti, who also worked in Mexico for a long time, Lola Álvarez Bravo developed her own style and a career independent of her husband.

After separating from Manuel Álvarez Bravo in 1934, she lived with the painter María Izquierdo for a while. In 1944 Lola Álvarez Bravo had her first solo exhibition at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

In 1951 she opened the Galeria de Arte Contemporáneo , where Frida Kahlo had her first and only solo exhibition in Mexico in 1953. Álvarez Bravo has also taught at the prestigious Academia de San Carlos .

In 1955 Lola Álvarez Bravo took part in the trend-setting photography exhibition The Family of Man , which was shown worldwide for many years and which was organized by Edward Steichen in the Museum of Modern Art , New York.

Her estate is located in the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona at Tucson , the National Museum of Women in the Arts , Washington, DC, and the Portland Museum of Art .
