Lomatium ochocense is a species of the genus Lomatium withinthe umbelliferae family (Apiaceae). This rare endemic is foundonly in the Ochoco Mountains in Crook County's Oregon . Common English names are Ochoco lomatium, Ochoco Desert-parsley.

description

Vegetative characteristics

Lomatium ochocense is a perennial herbaceous plant and remains relatively small with heights of up to 8 centimeters. The plant does not have a caudex . An irregularly shaped black root with a diameter of 3 centimeters is formed.

The usually two to five fleshy glossy blue-green leaves, of which the outer ones are often reduced, are divided into three or five, rarely seven overlapping sections. The individual leaf lobes are elongated to egg-shaped and rounded or pointed at the end. The leaf stalks are up to 3 inches long.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period lasts from mid-March to the end of April. Lomatium ochocense is Andromonöz . One to two 4 to 6 centimeter long inflorescence shafts are formed per plant specimen. The double-gold inflorescence is spread out horizontally. The two to six irregularly arranged rays are spread out, one to six of them are fertile . The flower stalks are up to 4 millimeters long. There are 10 to 15 flowers in each dölchen. There are about eight bracts are 2.5 to 3 millimeters long and 0.6 to 1 millimeters wide and lanceolate to ovate.

The sepals triangular-lanceolate and 0.1 to 0.2 millimeters long or absent. The yellow petals are oval to ovate with a length of 1 to 2 millimeters. The stamens ripen inconsistently. The stamens are 0.2 to 1.7 millimeters long. The anthers are yellow, later white and 0.4 to 0.7 millimeters long. The ovary is shiny green. The stylus are 0.8 to 1.2 millimeters long and shiny and yellowish green.

The bald double achenes are elliptical, 5 to 8 millimeters long and 3.5 to 4.5 millimeters wide. The dorsal ribs are thread-shaped, the lateral ribs narrow, thin-winged.

Site conditions

Lomatium ochocense is restricted to " wasteland " habitats ( English scabland ) with pronounced rock surfaces. The species associated with Lomatium ochocense include Artemisia rigida , Poa secunda , Allium macrum , Lewisia rediviva , Achnatherum hendersonii and Sedum stenopetalum .

Lomatium ochocense grows together with many other Lomatium species and can be distinguished from them by the blue-green leaves with overlapping leaflets.

Danger

Although it is an endemic with a very limited distribution area (10 to 50 km²), the populations are sufficiently large (up to 50,000 specimens in 1996) and are located on areas belonging to the Bureau of Land Management with a low risk potential. Lomatium ochocense was therefore provisionally classified as “ critically endangered” (“G2”) due to insufficient data on population development.

Taxonomy

Specimens of this species were discovered in 1994. As early as 1995, the name Lomatium ochocense was published by Richard Helliwell and Lincoln Constance without a description or specification of the type material and thus invalid, i.e. a noun nudum . In the years that followed, this species was the subject of genetic research. The valid first description of Lomatium ochocense Helliwell & Constance was made in 2010 by Richard Helliwell in A new Lomatium (Apiaceae) from the Ochoco Mountains of Central Oregon. In: Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas , Volume 4, Issue 1, page 7.
